Two vigilantes killed during Wednesday’s attack on Rantya community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State have been laid to rest amid growing concerns over insecurity in communities surrounding Jos, the state capital.
The burial ceremony, marked by grief and tension, attracted family members, youths and local security volunteers, who lamented the recurring attacks in parts of Jos South and called for stronger security measures.
Speaking at the funeral, the National President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Barrister Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, expressed concern over what he described as the increasing spread of insecurity towards communities within the Jos metropolitan area.
According to him, the attack, which reportedly occurred around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, has heightened fears among residents and raised fresh questions about the safety of communities located close to the city centre.
“Our hearts are deeply pained by what happened in Rantya. What is more troubling is that attacks are now taking place in communities close to the city centre. This should worry everyone and attract urgent intervention,” Mwantiri said.
He called for improved collaboration and communication between security agencies and community leaders, noting that stronger coordination would help reduce tension and restore public confidence.
The BYM president also questioned what he described as delayed responses by security operatives and the absence of arrests despite repeated attacks across parts of the state.
Mwantiri identified Gero, Nyango and Rantya as communities increasingly vulnerable to attacks and urged security agencies to intensify surveillance and adopt more proactive measures to safeguard lives and property.
He further appealed to residents to remain united irrespective of ethnic or religious differences and encouraged youths to support lawful community-based security initiatives aimed at restoring peace and stability in Plateau State.
