he Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has ordered manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers across Nigeria to immediately withdraw consumer goods with incomplete, misleading or deceptive labels from the market.

The Commission, in a public advisory issued on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, said the directive followed growing circulation, distribution and sale of consumer products that fail to comply with existing standards and regulations on product labelling.
According to the FCCPC, its market surveillance, routine inspections and quality assurance activities uncovered products carrying misleading or deceptive information, as well as goods without critical information required to guide consumers before purchase.

The Commission said some of the affected products lacked production dates, expiry or best-before dates, batch numbers, manufacturer details, ingredient lists, allergen information and country-of-origin declarations.

It warned that such practices violate consumers’ right to access accurate information and could expose them to health, safety and economic risks.

The FCCPC said its action was pursuant to Sections 17(p), (w), (x), 114, 116, 123 and 125 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA), 2018.

The Commission stated that it is empowered by law to promote consumer safety and ensure that manufacturers and other businesses comply with applicable labelling requirements and standards prescribed by competent regulatory agencies, including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

“Deceptive, incomplete, or misleading product labelling violates consumers’ right to the information required to make informed purchasing decisions and may expose them to significant health, safety, and economic risks,” the Commission said.

The FCCPC consequently directed all businesses involved in the manufacture, importation, distribution and sale of consumer goods to review their inventories and immediately remove non-compliant products from circulation.

It warned that businesses that continue to distribute or sell products that fail to meet mandatory labelling requirements could face regulatory enforcement action.

The Commission also urged consumers to scrutinise product labels before making purchases, particularly for information relating to production and expiry dates, batch numbers, manufacturers, ingredients and other mandatory declarations.

Consumers were advised to avoid products with missing, illegible, altered or poor-quality labels, as well as products carrying false claims or other potentially misleading information.

The FCCPC urged members of the public to promptly report suspected cases of non-compliance through its official complaint channels.

The Commission said it would continue to intensify nationwide market surveillance and enforcement operations in collaboration with relevant regulatory agencies to ensure businesses comply with applicable standards and strengthen consumer protection across Nigeria.
