The family of a man identified as Nura Hudu has demanded justice after he was allegedly beaten to death by a group of youths in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, over an alleged ₦80,000 debt arising from a transaction.

According to the family, the incident occurred on July 22, 2026, after a dispute involving a woman identified as Mrs. Winifred Terngu.

The family alleged that the deceased had entered into a transaction worth ₦150,000 and had already paid ₦70,000, leaving an outstanding balance of ₦80,000.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, a family alleged that Mrs. Terngu instructed some youths to assault Hudu over the unpaid balance, resulting in injuries that later claimed his life.

“Hudu was killed by some youths in Makurdi, Benue State, on July 22, 2026, on the instruction of one Tiv woman over a transaction of ₦150,000. He paid her ₦70,000, so the balance was ₦80,000. He died and left behind a wife and three children,” the source said.

Beaten

The family identified two alleged eyewitnesses as Abubakar Abuna and Isa Danbala.

The relative further alleged that officers from the B Division Police Station, High Level, Makurdi, were contacted after the assault.

“The DPO of B Division Police Station, High Level, Makurdi, had been calling the woman. She answered at first but later switched off her phone,” the source said.

“The police know her because after the boys finished beating him until he became unconscious, they called the police from B Division, which is very close to the scene, to pick him up. He later died at the station.”

According to the family, police subsequently informed them to collect Hudu’s body, but they refused and instead reported the matter to the Sarkin Hausawa and the Benue State Police Command Headquarters in Makurdi.

“The police then took the corpse to the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi,” the source added.

Meanwhile, flyers circulating on social media and seen by SaharaReporters have called for justice over the killing.

One of the flyers reads: “Brutally Beaten to Death. No human being deserves to die this way. Nura was allegedly subjected to a merciless assault that ended his life, leaving behind a grieving family, shocked friends, and a community demanding answers.

“Silence in the face of injustice only encourages more violence. We must stand together and demand a thorough investigation, accountability for those responsible, and justice for Nura.

“We demand justice. His life mattered. His voice may be gone, but our voices must not be silent.”

Another flyer identified the deceased as “Nuru Hudu” and noted that he is survived by a five‑month‑pregnant wife and three children.

The flyer urged the Benue State Government and security agencies to intervene, asking, “How many more must die before justice is served?”

SaharaReporters’ attempts to obtain a response from the woman identified by the family as Mrs. Winifred Terngu, who was said to have had a dispute with Hudu, were unsuccessful.

Calls to her phone went unanswered, and repeated WhatsApp messages had not received a reply as of the time of filing this report.
