Nigeria has successfully hosted the 26th African Telecommunications Union Conference of Plenipotentiaries (ATU-CPL-26), bringing together representatives from member states across the continent to deliberate on key issues shaping Africa’s position ahead of the International Telecommunication Union Plenipotentiary Conference scheduled for November.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr Aminu Maida, in a statement on Monday, commended stakeholders for their contributions to the success of the conference, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening Africa’s digital cooperation.

Maida particularly lauded the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, for his leadership, noting that his commitment, alongside the efforts of the ministry and other stakeholders, ensured that Nigeria provided a conducive platform for productive continental engagement.

He stated that over the course of seven days, participants exchanged ideas, debated diverse perspectives, and built consensus on critical issues affecting the telecommunications sector across Africa.

According to him, the conference reaffirmed a shared commitment among member states to advance Africa’s digital future through stronger regional cooperation.

Maida added that beyond the formal sessions, interactions among regulators and stakeholders provided valuable insights into both opportunities and challenges facing the sector, while underscoring the need for sustained collaboration.

“As we look ahead to the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, Nigeria remains committed to being a strong, constructive, and reliable voice for Africa on the global stage,” he said.

He also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s bid for re-election to the ITU Council, reaffirming the country’s dedication to promoting the continent’s collective interests within the global telecommunications community.

The NCC boss further congratulated Engr Kezias Kazuba Mwale of Zambia on his election as Secretary-General of the African Telecommunications Union for the 2027–2031 term, expressing confidence in his leadership.

Maida also commended the outgoing Secretary-General, Mr John Omo, for his eight years of service, describing his tenure as impactful and marked by strong leadership.

He wished both leaders success in their respective roles, while reiterating Nigeria’s commitment to deepening regional cooperation and advancing telecommunications development across Africa.
