Some retired Nigerian policemen have cried out to Nigerians to show love to police personnel, saying the Police Forces issues passing through trial aand misfortune and must not be abandoned.

The officers disclosed this in a statement titled “AN ADVICE TO NIGERIA: LET US SHOW LOVE TO OUR POLICE IN THEIR TRIAL” and shared with SaharaReporters.

They said police officers stand between Nigerians and danger at night and on highways, working under rain and sun while citizens sleep, yet many cannot feed their families and retire into poverty.

The aggrieved retirees said Nigerians should not hate all police officers because of the misconduct of a few, noting that the majority are suffering like other citizens.
They called on the Federal Government to exit the Nigeria Police Force from the Contributory Pension Scheme managed by the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) and give the police their own Pension Board like the military.

The statement read, “Our police are passing through trial and misfortune, and we must not abandon them. When we call during emergencies, they usually respond. When robbers and kidnappers come at night, they still stand between us and life and death. When we sleep, they are on the road under rain and sun. But today, the same policeman cannot feed his family. The same policeman retires and becomes a beggar.

“If we hate the police because a few officers misbehave, we are punishing the majority who are suffering like us.

“This is my advice to Nigerians, the Nigeria Police Force, and the National Pension Commission.

“To Citizens: Show a little love. If you see a policeman on duty under the sun, give him pure water. If you see his children hawking, understand that his salary is not enough. Do not curse all policemen — pray for their welfare reform. They are also human like you.

“To Government: EXIT POLICE FROM PENCOM NOW! Give them their own Police Pension Board like the military. Increase their salaries and fix their barracks. A hungry policeman cannot secure a hungry nation.

“To Serving Officers: We know you are suffering. We are fighting for you. The likes of D English Alhaji, Insp Samson Ikwuje, Dan Bello, Omoyele Sowore and Prof Rtd DSP Aliyu Yahaya are on the streets not for themselves, but for you. Do not see them as enemies.

“To Retired Officers: You are our fathers. Your suffering today is a warning to those still serving. Keep speaking. Nigeria is listening now. A nation that does not love those who protect it cannot have peace. Let us stand together: Our Police, Our Dignity. Exit Police From PENCOM Now.”

To drive home their appeal, the retired officers shared a poster titled, “OUR HEROES – VOICES FOR THE NIGERIAN POLICE: They Fight For Police Freedom, Dignity & Exit From PENCOM”

The retirees said serving officers should not see these activists as enemies, because they are on the streets not for themselves, but for the police.

They described retired officers as fathers whose present suffering is a warning to those still in service.

The plea comes as retired police officers have for years protested poor welfare, with protests held on July 21, September 29 and October 13 and 14, 2026 in Abuja, demanding that President Bola Tinubu assent to the Police Pension Board Bill passed on December 4, 2025.
